Imagine getting hired to be a deputy county manager only to have your job eliminated before your start date. The Texas AG has ruled that city councils cannot prohibit licensed individuals from carrying handguns into city council meetings. A city attorney gets fired for using AI in Maryland and a town manager in Maine loses his job over the purchase of a fire engine.

All that and more news after the job postings.

VA: (Wanna Lick? Psych!) Deputy County Manager Loses Job Before He Even Starts

The Culpepper County Board of Supervisors did its best Eddie Murphy impersonation on January 6. They voted 4-3 to eliminate the newly created deputy county administrator position citing budget concerns. In October they had voted unanimously to create it.

In December, the county announced the appointment of Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Jason Deal as deputy county administrator, effective Jan. 15, 2026. Yikes.

TX: Mayor allowed fired administrative assistant to retain access to his email account and calendar

Fascinating story in San Elizario where a mayor is accused of helping a fired employee sue the city. The administrative assistant "admitted to creating false documents in response to an open records request to the city," but the mayor did not support her termination.

The mayor allowed the employee to retain access to his city email and calendar after she was fired. The mayor pro tem ordered the city’s information technology department to change the password to the mayor’s account – without telling him.

ME: Fire Engine Purchase Cost Gray Town Manager His Job

Officials claim their town manager purchased a $1.25 million fire truck without their approval and with funds that do not exist. They also stated there were other financial oversights and that he reset his computer to factory settings. Additionally, the FBI is supposedly investigating a fraudulent invoice that was paid out and cost the town $100,000.

Former Gray Town Manager Michael Foley released a lengthy statement refuting the allegations. He says the funds were identified as available and shared with the council and that a public bid process was conducted and awarded per their purchasing policies.

NC: Quaint town rocked after married mayor was filmed sneaking woman into town hall in dead of night then walking around PANTSLESS

A mayor's pantless midnight rendevous with another woman is garnering international headlines. The news came to light in a lawsuit filed by a former IT employee claiming he was retaliated after reporting it to his supervisors.

The mayor was undone after the employee noticed that the mayor was swiping into the building at odd hours. However, the mayor claims it is all a big misunderstanding. He was feeling sick after mixing alcohol with some prescription pills and that instead of driving home impaired he rested at City Hall with the woman thoughtfully tending to him in his time of need.
