Some tough news to report this week as a former Texas city manager and his wife were apparently shot and killed by their son. A young city manager in Ohio diagnoses with a kidney disease steps down to tend to his health.

A Maryland executive on paid leave since mid-2023 is filing suit against his Commission and a South Carolina city manager who was fired last week -- was "unfired" this week and placed on leave as multiple processes and/or contract requirements may have not been followed by the majority seeking to terminate her.

All that and more in this week's news.

NC: Former Cary town manager ‘operated in secrecy,’ mayor says as he vows reforms

The fallout in Cary continues with the mayor blasting former city manager Sean Stegall and declaring that one-on-one meetings between the council and manager will be prohibited. The extreme reaction comes on the heels of allegations that Stegall “operated in secrecy” and catered to favorites on the council.

Additionally, it has been revealed that Stegall had the power to make purchases up to a whopping $1,000,000 without council approval. He purchased two parcels of lands totaling more than this amount, but he is accused of breaking the purchases into two separate transactions to circumvent the threshold.

VA: DEI Sleight of Hand in Charlottesville?

WI: Odd Situation in Wisconsin Town Over Property Assessments

The new Two Rivers city manager is dealing with many disgruntled residents after property taxes jumped dramatically following a nearly 20-year period where property valuations had not been re-assessed.

I am not sure how Wisconsin works but the article suggests that some localities hire a firm to do the valuation assessments.

Kyle Kordell said: “Accountability is important here, too. It’s good practice to competitively select new assessment firms every five or six years, so there are fresh eyes and strong accountability. That would help build confidence in the community that the system is working and fair.”
