NC: Cary Mayor Reflects on Town Manager’s Resignation: ‘I Thought He Was My Friend. How Did I Not See That?’

A mixture of shock, disbelief, and outrage has enveloped Cary, North Carolina -- and more specifically, Harold Weinbrecht, who has served as the mayor since 2007.

Sean Stegall seemed to be riding high, firmly ensconced as their city manager who was nearing ten years of service. And then "poof" -- seemingly in an instant everything was turned upside down.

“When I first started hearing things, I remember going home and staring at the TV with it being off for hours, going, ‘What is going on? How did I get here? What happened? Why did he do that? He’s my friend. I thought he was my friend. How did I not see that?’” Weinbrecht said.

Now leaders are trying to figure out solutions while facing increasing pressure from residents and the local Republican Party opposed to Stegall’s $200,000 severance package.
