FL: Bloodbath in Boca Raton with Big Changes on the Horizon
Big, big changes are coming to Boca Raton on multiple fronts.
First, city manager Mark Sohaney, who started in September, has axed two deputy city managers and a police chief.
This comes just days after a historic election in which a democrat was elected for mayor for the first time in over 30 years by just 5 votes. The two Republican candidates, one of which was endorsed by the police union, split the vote.
Social Circle City Manager Eric Taylor has put a lock on the water meter serving the 1-million square-foot warehouse the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is transforming into an U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center that could house as many as 10,000 people.
Taylor said, the only things that will prompt him to remove the lock are a directive from the Social Circle City Council, or, in the event that ICE challenges the lockout, a federal court order mandating that water service be restored.

Retiring Sleepy Eye City Manager Bob Elston asked a recruiter about the market for city managers:
“I learned it’s hard to hire people for a number of jobs, which is why we’re doing what we’re doing with my retirement. There are many interim city managers because it’s hard to hire these folks. I was told that if I had somebody that is interested and qualified, stick with them. If you need to spend some money on more training, do it. You’ll be ahead of the game instead of starting from scratch.”
City Clerk Michelle Strate was the only applicant according to the mayor in this article.
