Despite dozens of applications to the six-figure job, Spearfish's city administrator position remains vacant nearly five months after the former City Administrator Steve McFarland resigned.
Spearfish Mayor John Senden said about 45 people applied for the position with a starting salary range from $145,000 to $190,000, which is about three times South Dakota's median income.
The city sent out questionnaires to 20 of the 45 candidates, and then conducted Zoom interviews. That process yielded two finalists who visited Spearfish.
Senden said factors such as having to move family to the area contributed to those candidates ultimately deciding not to move forward.
